HVAC Hacks: Tips for Novices and New Homeowners

4 Common Signs That You Need Air Conditioning Services

Air conditioning problems occur when you least expect them. And in many cases, it's when there are extreme weather conditions that your AC system will stop working. Then, you and your family are left sweating due to the high temperatures or shivering due to the cold. But are you aware that many AC breakdowns occur because people ignore the signs, and with time, those signs escalated into a huge problem? Here are the common signs that you need air conditioning services:

1. You Can Hear Odd Noises

Your AC system isn't designed to be overly noisy. Sure, you might hear the occasional soft clicking sound when turning on your air conditioning, and that's fine. But when you start to hear odd squeaking, banging, or humming sounds, there's a cause for concern.

If you hear these noises, it's advisable to call a professional HVAC contractor to check your AC system. The loud squeaking sound might be a sign that the blower is malfunctioning, while the banging sound might be a sign that the compressor needs to be replaced.

2. Your AC System Is Short-Cycling

Short-cycling refers to the state where your AC turns on, runs on for a short period, turns off, turns on again, and the cycle repeats. This not only affects the ability of the AC system to serve its purpose in your home, but it also contributes to energy wastage.

If your AC is short-cycling, don't hesitate to seek air conditioning services. If you delay, the short-cycling might push your AC too hard, such that it results in a total breakdown, in which case you'll be forced to replace it.

3. Your AC Is Releasing Strange Smells

If you start to experience foul odors in your house after turning on your AC unit, that's not normal. In many cases, it's difficult to tell the causes of these smells without doing an internal examination of the system.

The unpleasant odors may emanate from the AC unit if it cannot properly drain the water droplets absorbed from the room. A musty smell may signify there's mold inside the system, while a burning odor may indicate the blower is malfunctioning. Whatever strange odor you detect, don't hesitate to seek AC services before the problem deteriorates.

4. There's Moisture on Your System

Your AC system should remain dry at all times. If you notice some moisture accumulating on the sides, you need to address the issue immediately. For a start, the moisture could be a sign that the drain tube is broken or blocked. In some cases, it could also be an indication that the refrigerant is leaking, so much repair is needed.

Contact a local air conditioner contractor to learn more about what to do in these situations.
