HVAC Hacks: Tips for Novices and New Homeowners

Two Ways To Reduce AC Energy Consumption

HVAC systems are complicated, but that doesn't mean that you, the homeowner, cannot do a little bit of DIY maintenance. There are certain parts of a central HVAC system that are very easy to maintain. Often, the simple maintenance jobs can increase the energy efficiency of your system and even reduce your electricity bills. Here are two easy ways that you can reduce your electricity bills with some simple HVAC maintenance.

Clean the Air Registers

The easiest, but often overlooked, maintenance job is to simply clean the air registers. The registers, where the air comes into your rooms, can act as a funnel for dust. Basically, dust can accumulate on the inside of your registers, and the only way to fix this is to remove the registers from the wall and clean them thoroughly. This is a very simple job because the registers can be removed from the wall with just a handheld screwdriver.

Then, you can clean both sides of your registers using a scrub brush or a rag. It is also good idea to look inside your air ducts while you have the registers off the wall. If you notice any severe dust or mold inside your ducts, this is a problem that you should probably have looked at by a professional HVAC technician.

Clean the Furnace Blower

Another important DIY maintenance job is to clean your furnace blower. To do this you will need to open up your furnace cabinet and turn off the power. This is very simple, but some furnaces do not have a power switch, so you need to find the breaker for the unit. Once the power is turned off, it is safe to clean out the blower compartment. Usually, you can do this with just a hose vacuum.

If there is dust buildup that is caked on to the side of the blower compartment and fan blades, you might need to wipe it down with a wet rag and soap. Nonetheless, this is a job that will probably only take a few minutes.

In fact, you can probably do all of these jobs within the matter of a couple of hours. Just like that, without spending any money, you can increase the efficiency of your HVAC system by improving airflow. This might also improve the quality of air in your home, which is a major issue if anyone suffers from allergies.
